WELCOME TO MY eBay GUIDE for CB RADIO's
This page is dedicated to ALL things eBay.
I have been buying and selling CB Radio's, Equipment and Accessories on eBay for the past (7) years (Here is my eBay link: myshackshop ) and I thought it would be fun to have a page solely dedicated to buying, selling and reviewing CB Equipment traded on eBay.
I personally feel that eBay is THE reason for the revival of the CB Radio. Some may argue that CB is still dead and I can't agree or disagree, but it consistently remains as one of eBay's more popular trading categories as well as Ham radio, scanners and electronics in general.
The trucking industry boom has also helped keep the CB industry alive and that has been the focus of most new radio gear on the market today. There are others, like me, that still enjoy the classic CB days of old.The days of the CB Shack and the ol' base unit!
Part of my goal with this page is to provide feedback, tips and pricing guidelines for those that may be new to eBay and don't want to get stuck with buying over-priced equipment. Or, for those who just want to get another opinion of a possible purchase.
I hope to provide a guideline on the "range" of prices that a radio or accessory may cost.
Experience has shown me that there are a number of reasons that drive the price of radio gear on eBay and they are as follows:
1) Condition- the condition is the most important element that dictates the price of the item. If it's mint and in the original box, with all orginal accessories, you are going to pay top dollar for that item. If it's a hunk of junk, and doesn't work and you can barely make out what it looks like because of a poor picture, and description, then it will generally go for next to nothing, depending on collectibility (see below).
2) Collectibility- If the radio or accessory is considered rare and collectible- regardless of condition, it will always go for a higher price. Again, it depends on the condition of the equipment but a super rare piece will always bring top prices.
3) Bidding War- sometimes a bidding war will artificially raise the price of an item that would normally go for much less. I have found that new eBayer's or someone who REALLY wants a particular item, will drive up the price to get what they want. Now, as a seller, that's GREAT news, but it also means a greater chance of actually not getting paid once the winner comes to their senses! I had a very nice Realistic TRC-490 sell for $187.00 recently due to a bidding war (I'm not complaining!) and I got paid for it. It was a new ebayer who had owned a TRC-490 many years ago and reallty wanted another one to bring back his glory days (see below).
4) Sentimentality: Buying a radio or piece of equipment because you owned one "years" ago is another reason for people bidding a little higher than normal. I have purchased a number of radio's because of this and I think that's where eBay has really made a difference. It has opened up the market for old owners to sell radio's they no longer want or need, therefore putting items out there for everyone else to bid on.
5) Time of year: Summer is a buyers market and winter is a sellers market. During the summer more people are outside, at ball games, cookouts and family events and they are NOT on the computer. Less people on the computer means less competition for items, so many deals can be made in the summer. The opposite is true in the winter, when more than two-thirds of North America are confined to their homes due to the cold weather and early darkness. Again, more people in front of the computer, means more competition than the summer months. Time of day and the day of the week are also two important factors that reflect on the ending price of the radio. As a buyer, finding that radio that ends at 3.30 in the morning on a Tuesday night, you are going to get a deal on it!
Those are my top (5) factors on what the drives the CB radio market. You are always going to have other reasons like shipping costs, feedback ratings and is the item available Internationally, but the above categories are a good starting point.
I will be listing various price examples below as requests are sent to me for guides. Again, these prices are based just on my opinions formed from my eBay experiences and are NOT intended for any other reason but to assist in your decision to buy a particular item.
